The wire rack that came with the house — a strip of vinyl-coated steel and two plastic brackets — was pulled out and replaced with a solid hardwood shelf on a concealed cleat, with a matte black hanging rail run through the shelf itself. It's still a shelf — but built the way a piece of furniture is built, not snapped together from a kit.
Every shelf starts as a full-scale mockup on the bench.
Nothing fancy — scrap ply, marked out in tape, checked against the space before anything gets cut in real material. It's a simple step, but it's the one that means no surprises once the hardwood goes under the saw.

That standard — hand-fitted joints, materials chosen for how they age, hardware treated as a design element — carries over directly to shelving.
